WETE’s First Cohort at Nazareth House: How It Began and What’s Next
Women Empowerment Through Education (WETE) was founded in 2015 by Sr. Dr. Mary Rose-Claret Ogbuehi. It is registered with the Ministry of Gender Affairs and Social Development and funded by the Stephanus Foundation. The operating office is at CIDJAP, Uwani, Enugu. The project started with eleven young women from very poor backgrounds. Ten were placed at the Nazareth House Catering Centre in Coal Camp, Enugu, which is managed by the Catholic Women Organization of Enugu Diocese. One learner was linked to a local private tutor, Olive Fashion Designer, in Abakpa Nike. Training covers real, useful skills. Learners study home management, catering, decoration, clothing and textiles, craft practice, hotel management, cosmetology, and sewing. Classes began on 13 September 2021. Six students stayed in the hostel, while four attended as day students. The course runs for two years (2021–2023), and WETE paid all first-term expenses. WETE’s Coordinator introduced the programme to the school on 24 September 2021. The President of the Catholic Women Organization, Prof. Mrs. Okoli, welcomed the team and praised the support from the Stephanus Foundation. The school’s Principal, Mrs. Nkechi Okafor, promised proper care and guidance for the learners.LIST OF WETE BENEFICIARIES 2021 – 2023
